Executive Director Retires

Victoria E. Furey
 After twenty five years of dedicated service to the hundreds & hundreds of men and woman in the greater Bridgeport area recovering from mental illness, our Executive Director, Victoria E. Furey is retiring at the end of 2011. The members and staff of Bridge House hope she will always remember how much she is dearly loved, respected and that her legacy will live on.

Ms. Furey became Executive Director of Bridge House Inc. in 1986, the year the non-profit organization was founded. Prior to working at Bridge House, Ms. Furey worked at the Southwest Regional Mental Health Board for seven years, first as a review specialist, then as the mental health planner and finally as its Executive Director.

Ms. Furey has dedicated many years of service within the mental health field. She received her Bachelor's degree from Monmouth University in 1972 and her Master's Degree in Clinical Psychology from Fairleigh –Dickinson University in 1974. She worked at Mt. Carmel Guild, a comprehensive community mental health center, first as an intern and then in the outpatient department founding the first after-care program for patients leaving State Hospitals. She served as coordinator of the emergency and crisis departments in addition to her other duties.

We sincerely thank Ms. Furey for her dedication, encouragement and constant care and she will surely be missed.

Bridge House Hosts a Legislative Breakfast

On March 8th, area legislators and Bridge House staff and members came together to discuss Bridge House; its role in the community and its importance to its members. Pat Bryson, the Master of Ceremonies, spoke first about her position on the ICCD. Pat a clubhouse member, also explained that she had lived in many shelters before she had discovered Bridge House. "... All of us here at Bridge House are not called clients or patients....We are members of this clubhouse and we come together as family and decide things together." Pat went on to decscribe her journey, how the clubhouse works and what members do.

Several other Bridge House member spoke as well. Josh Seavy  talked and listed the educational and vocational opportunities he had received through Bridge House. Barbara Johnson spoke about a a Bridge House Circle Line Cruise that made her feel like living again. She talked about how hard it was to leave her house before becoming a member. Barbara went on to say that she didn't feel discriminated against and that  she felt that at Bridge House she was treated like a human being. Maureen Kearns gave a compelling speech about Bridge House helping her to get her citizenship and consequently being able to see her family in Jamaica again.
